WASHINGTON (WKRC) - There are new safety concerns from the FDA on some CBD products. The agency now has a warning for at least 15 companies. The FDA is warning these companies for what they say are illegal sales of products with cannabidiol, or CBD. They don't name the specific companies. The agency detailed safety concerns, saying there were certain violations, including marketing unapproved new human and animal drugs, selling certain CBD products as dietary supplements and adding CBD to human and animal foods. The FDA issued warning letters to these 15 companies. They stated they are illegally selling products containing CBD, which violates the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. It also published a revised consumer update detailing safety concerns about CBD products more broadly. The agency says based on the lack of scientific information supporting the safety of CBD in food, they cannot conclude that CBD is generally recognized as safe among qualified experts for its use in food. The FDA says it's now looking to explore potential pathways for various types of CBD products to be marketed lawfully. It says it's concerned people think these are products approved by the FDA and there is no harm in trying them, when, in some cases, we don't know that yet. The agency says it is seeking answers to questions related to safety and public health standards and will provide an update in the coming weeks.
