Check out the official app Watch more How to Understand Sex videos: So the first thing that I want you to get if you're considering oral medication is that you've gone to the urologist and you've been evaluated and assessed and you've been given this medication by a prescribing doctor. Too many times these days I have clients come in where they get these medications online. And there really is a huge disadvantage to that because you're not quite sure A, what you're getting and B, you haven't had a thorough health assessment to really help you find what is the right medication. So that aside, once you've decided to take a medication, Viagra is one of several oral options. There's also Cialis and there's Levitra. And one of the hallmarks that differentiates the different medications is their half life. And a simple way of saying that is how long is it going to be effective in my body. So the thing is as a sex therapist, I like about Cialis is it has a very long half life. We sort of call it the weekender. And by that, if you're like most couples, chances are your sexual experience is going to happen on a weekend. So you can just take that pill, say on a Thursday and know that you're good. You're not having to think about, "Wait, does this feel like the moment or I don't know. Is my partner going to be interested in sex like in an hour from now?" So having the flexibility, just knowing that it's on board is often the thing that you need. Just to relax, let go, and enjoy an experience. So the pros about taking oral medication is in your treatment options for erectile dysfunction, the oral ones put the control in your hands and they're the least invasive. And most user friendly because you don't need to tell your partner that you've taken a medication or a pill. So I like the flexibility of the oral medications. And absolutely their effectiveness. If however, Viagra or any of the oral agents doesn't work for you, then obviously an ineffective medication is a serious con. The important thing for you to know is that other treatment strategies are absolutely available. And importantly don't make that decision too quickly because what I often see is people say, "Oh, I tried it once and it didn't work." And sometimes that's because they actually thought that if I took this pill, I'd spontaneously have an erection. And that's not how it works. It works by relaxing smooth muscle tissue in order to facilitate blood flow. So the thing about these oral medications is try, try again so that you can relax and let go and not focus on, "Oh my gosh. I just took this pill, what's it going to do to my body?" Instead you can be like, "Oh, I know what this is going to do." And you know that it enhances your arousal and then you can just let go and begin to enjoy the experience with your partner.
