After nearly a decade of working in clinical research finding success with ketogenic diets, Dr. Westman became the director of the Lifestyle Medicine Clinic at Duke University. In his practice, Dr. Westman has treated thousands of patients with what he refers to as “ketogenic medicine”. While he mainly treats patients with obesity and type-2 diabetes, he is now involved with treating more complicated cases such as heart failure and inflammatory bowel syndrome. In our interview with Dr. Westman, he explains how traditional diabetes care typically leads to weight gain, which exacerbates the disease, and that most patients feel empowered by the idea of lifestyle interventions that reduce medications. He also shares how he uses a ketogenic diet in the clinic, notably how flexible the diet can be, and how by understanding the fundamentals, it can be easy and versatile. "You don't need to make it fancy or expensive." He tells his story of getting introduced to the ketogenic diet and how he worked with Dr. Atkin's to run one of the first low-carb diet trials.
